Fire Types - Classes of Fire
In Ireland, fires are classified based on their fuel source, which helps determine the appropriate firefighting methods. The classification system aligns with European standards and includes the following classes:
Class A Fires
Fires involving solid materials like wood, paper, textiles, or plastics. Extinguished with water, foam, or dry powder extinguishers.
Class B Fires
Fires caused by flammable liquids, such as petrol, oil, or solvents. Foam, dry powder, or CO2 extinguishers are typically used.
Class C Fires
Fires involving flammable gases, like propane or methane. Dry powder extinguishers are most effective, but isolating the gas supply is critical.
Class D Fires
Fires involving metals, such as magnesium or titanium. Specialised dry powder extinguishers designed for metal fires are required.
Class E Fires - Electrical
Electrical fires involving live electrical equipment. CO2 or dry powder extinguishers are used, and the power supply should be isolated if safe.
Class F Fires
Fires caused by cooking oils or fats, common in kitchens. Wet chemical extinguishers are specifically designed for these fires.
Each class requires specific extinguishers, and using the wrong one can worsen the situation (e.g., water on electrical or oil fires). Fire safety training in Ireland emphasizes identifying these classes for effective response.
